Why Third-Party Testing Matters

In India and globally, sports nutrition brands are not required to have their products independently tested before sale. The protein content on the label is calculated by the manufacturer using their own in-house testing โ€” a clear conflict of interest.

Third-party certifications exist to break this conflict. An independent lab buys the product off the shelf (like any consumer would), tests it, and publishes the results. No brand approval. No pre-notification.

Labdoor

Labdoor is a US-based supplement testing organization that has been running independent tests since 2012. They buy products directly from retail, test them in FDA-registered labs, and publish full scorecards publicly on labdoor.com.

What Labdoor Tests For

  • Label Accuracy: Does the product contain the amount of protein it claims? Products are graded Aโ€“F.
  • Product Purity: Tests for heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury), banned substances, and microbiological contamination.
  • Nutritional Value: Fat content, carbohydrate content, sugar levels.
  • Ingredient Safety: Known allergens, ingredient quality score.
Labdoor has publicly caught brands overstating protein content by up to 30% and found heavy metal contamination in products that were selling millions of units.

Labdoor Limitations

Labdoor primarily tests products sold in the US market. Indian market availability of Labdoor-tested products is limited, though some global brands (Dymatize, Optimum Nutrition, AS-IT-IS) have been tested. Their database doesn't cover the majority of India-only brands.

Trustified

Trustified is an Indian platform launched specifically to address the gap in domestic supplement testing. It's newer than Labdoor but growing fast, with testing partnerships with NABL-accredited labs.

What Trustified Tests For

  • Protein content accuracy: Does the label claim match the lab result?
  • Amino acid profile: Is the protein quality complete, or does it show signs of amino spiking?
  • Heavy metals: Arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury.
  • Microbiological safety: Bacterial contamination tests.

Trustified Advantages for Indian Buyers

Trustified tests products available on the Indian market โ€” including domestic brands like MuscleBlaze, HealthXP, and Big Muscles that Labdoor has never tested. For Indian buyers, this is currently the most relevant certification to look for.

What the Certification Doesn't Guarantee

Both certifications test a product at a point in time. Formulations can change, manufacturing quality can vary between batches, and certification doesn't cover every SKU (a brand's flavored variant may be untested even if the unflavored one passed). Treat certification as a strong positive signal, not an absolute guarantee.

Our Recommendation

For Indian buyers: prioritise Trustified-certified products for domestic brands, Labdoor for international brands. A product that has neither isn't necessarily bad โ€” but the burden of proof is on it to demonstrate value on price per gram. Use our comparison table to filter by certification alongside price.
